Welcome to RCC's 3D Design and Printing Camp!
The camp will run June 12th to 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at RCC Glenns Campus.
The software used for this camp is AutoCAD Fusion 360
Here is the camp's curriculum timeline (subject to change)

- Day 1: Scaling, CAD Sketching, Drafting, 2D modeling, make a 2D model to get printed
- Day 2: 1 to 1 clay modeling, measurements, 3D modeling basics, start 3D animal model
- Day 3: Constraints, start designing 3D model rocket, finish 3D animal model to be printed
- Day 4: 3D modeling radial patterns, make sure design fit rocket engine, print 3D model rockets
- Day 5: Stretch day: Students get to do their own self guided designs or finish their rocket. Parents are invited to rocket launches at 12:15.
Chamfer inside engine hole
|
Make sure your inside hole for the engine is not flat, and that it has an angle. If it is flat, the printer needs to print supports for it, and that would be in the way so you would not be able to put your engine in.
You can either do this using the hole tool originally and make the angle at the bottom of this picture to the right smaller, or you can use the chamfer tool on the top of your hole to angle it up instead of being flat. |
Inspect took: Check these before printing rocket
- Make sure your engine hole is wider than the diameter of the diameter of the engine
- Make sure your engine hole is not too deep (too deep will have the fire melt the bottom, but yet deep that most of it will not fit in the hole
- Make sure the top of the engine hole is chamfered (angled) so the 3D printer can print it
- Make sure the rocket is not too tall, the 3D printer can only print things so tall
- Make sure the holes you made for the guide rail are big enough to fit the rail
Redesign your main rocket body
Now that we have learned these two tools, redesign your rocket body. You can revolve or shell out your shape and then we can test if the rocket engine can fit in the hole you make at the bottom.
Day 5
Students, fill out this form for proof of enrollment |
Friday is a catchup and reach-day.
We are starting by letting you quickly finish your rocket design if you need that time. Hopefully, almost everyone has that done though.
If you are done, you get to design something on your own. If you finish it, we will vote as a class to see what we will 3D print and you will get it today or you will be able to pick it up at Glenns RCC sometime soon : )
Have your parent email me to ask about getting it later.

Show and Tell and Rocket Launches
At 12:00 parents are invited to our classroom (158) for a short show-and-tell where students can share the things they designed on the computer and what they were able to get printed. Mr. Dorsey will share other regional STEM opportunities your family can consider when your students get older.
At around 12:15, we will walk down to the RCC parking lot to do the rocket launches and take a class picture. The show and tell and rocket launches are optional for parents. We should be done at around 12:30 for parent pickup.

Other STEM Student Opportunities
Want to continue in STEM? See the following opportunities!
All of these programs are FREE!

If your student enjoys STEM, here are some other regional opportunities you might want to consider in the coming years.
Chesapeake Bay Governor's School (CBGS)
The Chesapeake Bay Governor's School for Marine and Environmental Science is your region's STEM magnet school open to area public school students from 10th to 12th grade. Students apply while in 9th grade.
If you are interested, it is worth talking to guidance now to discuss your student's math track. Students should need to have geometry finished before enrolling in CBGS, but having Algebra II done before enrolling usually leads to students performing better.

RCC Dual Enrollment (DE)
RCC DE Webpage: rappahannock.edu/academics/dual-enrollment/
Dual enrollment provides students the opportunity to take community college courses while enrolled in high school. Dual enrollment courses allow qualified high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses during the school day where they receive both college and high school credit prior to high school graduation. Freshmen and sophomores can enroll with special approval from RCC’s administration.
Dual Enrollment can provide you with enough credits to graduate from high school with your Associate's Degree from RCC. You graduate from both high school and college your senior year! Please use the link above to learn more. It is never to early to plan!
